Trucking experts are gearing up for a big study to dig into how long truckers have to wait when they’re dropping off deliveries. This study, led by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), will look at data from about 80 trucking companies and 2,500 truck drivers. They want to figure out how truckers use detention time, and how bad it is when they do.

The truckers and companies in the study will keep track of their wait times for a whole year. The goal is to find ways to make things better for the drivers. You see, when truckers have to wait too long, it’s not just annoying—it can cost them money. But right now, many of them don’t get paid for that time they spend waiting around.

One group, the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA), talked about how waiting too long during detention time can lead to more accidents.

They pointed to a report from a few years back that showed even just 15 extra minutes of detention time can make crashes more likely. That’s a big deal!

Another group, the American Trucking Associations (ATA), thinks it’s not fair that the truckers and companies are the ones who suffer when there’s too much waiting. They say the companies that own the places where trucks stop should do more to fix the problem. After all, they’re the ones who can control how things work at their docks.

But solving this waiting problem isn’t easy. There are lots of reasons why trucks might have to wait, and every company does things differently. So, the government has a tough job trying to come up with rules that work for everyone.

Even though not everyone agrees on how to fix it, everyone does agree that waiting too long is a big problem for truckers and trucking companies. It’s not just about making sure they get paid fairly—it’s also about keeping everyone safe on the road. So, this study is a big step in the right direction. With more information, maybe they can figure out how to make things better for everyone involved.

The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) shared some important info about trucks. They talked about something called dwell time, which is how long a truck stays at a place. They said if this time increases by just 15 minutes, there’s a higher chance of accidents. They even cited a report from 2018 that backed this up.

The OOIDA said that when trucks have to wait too long at places, it’s not good for business. It means drivers can’t do as many jobs, so they lose money. The problem is, the companies that own the places where trucks stop don’t always care about this. They don’t lose money when trucks wait, so they don’t try to fix the problem. The OOIDA thinks this isn’t fair, especially for smaller truck companies and independent drivers.

The report on detention time also said that all this waiting costs truck drivers a lot of money every year—over a billion dollars! And the companies that own the trucks lose hundreds of millions too. That’s a lot of cash going down the drain because trucks have to wait too long.

The Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) also spoke up about this issue. They said that it’s not easy to solve because there are many reasons why trucks have to wait. Every trucking company has its own way of keeping track of time, so it’s hard for the government to make rules about it.

Even though it’s a big problem, not everyone agrees on how to fix it. The American Trucking Associations (ATA) had some doubts about using rules to solve the problem. They think the government should focus more on making sure trucks are safe on the road, instead of worrying too much about how long they have to wait.

So, it seems like everyone agrees that waiting too long is a big problem for truckers and the companies that own the trucks. But figuring out how to fix it is a tricky puzzle that people are still trying to solve.
